Build your coffin wreath
Starting with a pencil and paper start your rough design establishing dimensions for your coffin, Maddie was my expert with this one.
After the measurements are made the wood is cut to the specific angles that are needed to join the edges of your coffin. The corners were first glued, and held together with my tip by using painters tape then secured with staples from my pneumatic stapler.
After cutting and securing your pieces together with a staple, I darkened the coffin with a black wax. (Side note: the wax made it harder for the hot glue to adhere to the wood so I would recommend just gluing the critters onto the wood directly and skipping the wax step.)
We made snakes out of rope, by simply cutting the rope into pieces and wrapping it around the coffin. We decided our snakes didn’t look quite as real as we liked without a head, so a head was fashioned out of blue painters tape to give our snakes a more realistic and creepy feel.
Hot glue made a quick job out of sticking the snakes and $ store creepie crawlies onto the coffin.
We essentially covered the entire surface of the coffin with all of our critters until it just dripped with halloween creepiness. Then we spray painted it all black.
I almost decided to repaint the front door to make it more creepy…but decided against it. We hung the coffin wreath on the red door and called it good enough. A grey door would have made it look way more spooky though. Don’t you think?
