Painting the Kitchen Cabinets
I finally got around to cleaning after the kitchen remodel, so I could take some after pictures. It still isn’t quite finished. Someday I might get around to some window treatments and another someday new appliances. The cabinets were nice (raised panel-classic design), just ugly so all I had to do there was paint. I also applied beadboard and corbels to the island to give it more substance and painted the walls and molding. It’s amazing how much of a difference paint can make.
Here is it looked like before.
See the space between the cabinet and patio door? There was room there for a lovely garbage can if a person wanted to put one there. I did not, so I removed the existing upper cabinet and built 2 new upper cabinets and an additional base cabinet. Then I made one of the existing base cabinets a slide out garbage cabinet. I built the uppers 14″ deep to fit larger items like chargers or serving dishes that don’t always fit in a standard 12″ cabinet.

what color/brand white did you use? thats what i’m struggling with most is picking out my white color!
You so inspire me as I look at all the jobs that need to be done in my house. I’m a single working mom and I need to save money. Please share with me the steps for painting kitchen cabinets and woodwork. Both are oak and I want to change them to white, but I want to do it right. Thanks!
P.S. Did you replace the floors yourself? I have a golden retriever and am still trying to decide b/w hardwood or laminate floors. All my floors need to be replaced – my house is 24 yrs old with original carpets. Thanks again!
We have dogs – big dogs – too, so I feel your dilemma when it comes to choosing flooring. I am leaning towards cork for my kitchen. It is quiet, warm, soft under foot and easy for dogs to maintain their grip, as well as not showing marks and scratches. Its antimicrobial and a green, renewable resource as well. There are so MANY colors now to choose from. It’s amazing and inspiring! In our basement we have decided on luxury vinyl tile for some of the same reasons – dogs. This is the area we live in, watch TV, build a fire, and come and go to the patio, backyard and grill. The dogs always have to be wiped down, except in summer because of our weather in the NW and the carpet. It’s a very durable product with lengthy warranties and lots of choices. There are DIY versions and glue-down styles. Pulling up carpet is fun! Look for a place in your community to recycle both carpet and pad as we have done in the past. It’s a dusty dirty job, heavy and time consuming. But the results are worth it!
I'd love some kitchen tips. We are moving into a new (to us) house in less than 2 weeks and I need to paint some 80s oak 🙂 We painted our cabs in our previous house but I want to bump it up a notch at the next place. I keep having phobias about painting the wood trim, but I know it is the right thing to do, and I love a white kitchen. You did a great job!
Love your house, my kitchen is similiar to yours, I even have lemons in a bowl on my island. Love your hallway and stairs area. I just started working on mine! Ange
Can I ask what color of white and brand you used on your cabinets?
