Today’s house tour includes the Stairs and Hallway Upstairs. This space was featured in Small Spaces Magazine and all over the web. People love a good Picture Frame Collage Wall!
The wainscoting and picture frame collage extends up the stairs and down the hallway. I spent a few weeks creating the wainscoting. It’s MDF that I routed with a “Roman Ogee” bit. Then I spent another week priming, sanding and painting it. It took a few days painting and hanging all the picture frames. Not too bad in terms of time/work for the impact it created. I love having it extend all the way down both the upstairs and downstairs hallways. It adds texture and the white and bright paint make the hallway not seem super narrow.

This is amazing!! I just found your blog and I am hooked, I am making my husband very nervous 🙂 So my question is how tall is your wainscoting on the landing and coming down the stairs? I am making my drawings as I type. Thanks for being my inspiration picture!Jessica

Thank you for responding to our questions and posts. I posted something last week, and you quickly responded and answered my question. I have a couple more…1. I noticed that your entry wainscoting is taller than your upstairs hallway wainscoting. Is that because your ceilings are higher downstairs? And, what is the exact measurements of each? I am somewhat sure, going by where they line up compared to your doors (as I have the same doors).2. How many inches wide are each piece of the horizontal and vertical moldings (MDF)? They seem to be about 4 inches or so, but hard to tell on the pictures. And the bottom one is about double that?Again, thanks to much for the inspiration. You have truly worked very hard to make your house a home, and it [email protected]

I absolutely LOVE your photo frame walls! I am going to try to incorporate the idea into my home. Can you tell me the finish of the paint you used on the frames. They look matte to me, but I wanted to make sure.

Sandra, I adore your house. Seriously if I could buy it I would. If you don't sell this house in a heartbeat I would be amazed. It's so beautiful! Great work.

You don't even need a real estate agent. Just post your blog address everywhere, and let the stampede of buyers begin!

I would totally pay you money to do that in my house. 😉 If I had money to spend, that is. You have really, really improved what started out as an already nice home by most of the world's standards. Great job! Still trying to convince my hubby about wainscoating in what was once the dark creepy living room which we are renaming The Happy Room. It will take a while. Right now it's gone from dreary/creepy to resigned. 😉

I love what you've done with the place!I think I like this part of the home tour the best… the transformation is simply amazing. It doesn't even look like the same hallway. You are so smart to take before and after pictures. Our old house was a fixer-upper, and we forgot to take before pictures. It was always a bummer telling people, "No, it really did look heinous before we started in here. Really!"

OK, OK, you can come work on my house…:) I'm sure you've always wanted to come up to Alaska right?! Thanks for the inspiration. It makes me happy!

Hi Sandra!
Just discovered your blog via Pinterest. You have a beautiful home! In this particular post, you mentioned hiring painters to stain the treads and railing the same color as your floors, but what did you do with the parts of the stairs that are now white – the sides and backs of the stairs (they were all wood colored in the before pic)? Did you just paint these white yourself, and if so, did you sand and prime them first or just paint over the wood with a semi-gloss paint? I’d like to do this in my house but I wasn’t sure how to proceed.
Thanks!!
Amanda

Do you have more pictures of the trim work of the doorway that runs into your stairs? I have a very similar setup and have been looking for ways to trim the doorway with the stair rail running into it. It looks BEAUTIFUL!
