This Speed Clip Tape Measure Holder from FastCap clips on your belt to hold your tape measure and pencil. This a simple and inexpensive accessory is a workshop favorite!
Bonus: it has a built-in pencil sharpener so you’re never stuck with a dull pencil, rummaging through your storage drawers looking for a sharpener.
The pencil sharpener is on one side of the tape measure holder area. On the opposite side is a slotted pencil holder which is really easy to get a pencil in and out of but also holds the pencil in place securely.

There’s no need to remove your belt to attach the speed clip either. The speed clips attaches to your belt with a clip that slides on from the top. You can take it put it on or take it off in seconds. But it holds securely enough to stay in place until you remove it.
The tape measure holder projects out from the speed clip which makes it easier grab the measure when you want to use it and clip it back in place when you want it on your hip.
The Speed Clip Tape Measure Holder is constructed of plastic and the pencil holding fingers will most likely eventually lose their flex or their ability to spring back (especially if you shove in a fat marker or pencil) but it’s a $5 accessory so I don’t mind replacing it ever couple years.
I have two favorite tape measures that I frequently have seated in my speed clip tape measure holder:
- the Flatback I use for woodworking and precise measurements up to 16′ in length. (The Flatback is the tape measure pictured in the photos in this post.)
- the Lefty-Righty is the one I grab on a daily basis for everything else. I like it because I can read it from the left and the right – as indicated in it’s name. This one comes in 16′ and 25′ lengths.
