How to use curtains to hide an off center window

I finally got the curtains up in my master closet!   The off-center window has been driving me crazy so I had to get something up — quick!  There wasn’t a chance I was going to rip out the window and move it over so I had to get creative and just trick my eyes with some visual “deception”.  Here’s how to use curtains to hide an off center window. How to use curtains to hide an off center window

I installed a long curtain rod above the window that extended over into the area where I needed to pretend the window also extended.  So the curtain rod is centered in this space.  I hung a curtain panel on each end of the curtain rod, pulled to the ends and only leaving a small bit of window exposed.   Open the curtains any wider and you see the side of the window moulding.  Depending on how large your window is and how off center it is, you might be able to open your drapes wider.

Even though there’s only a little sliver window showing, my eyes are so much happier now that I’ve tricked them into thinking the window is centered!

  1. Is it just me or are the links all wonky, taking me to nonexistent sites? I will just go to o.co and find it the old-fashioned way! 🙂

  2. Love it! “Centering” the window makes all the difference.
You may also want to consider something like bamboo shades hung higher, to create another illusion that the window is taller. I think that would finish off your look perfectly.

And fyi, if you are still considering an ottoman, One Kings Lane has an ottoman sale today.

  3. I love your curtain choice and think you did a great job on “tricking” the eye!

  4. What about hanging a sheer in the middle between the two panels? Then it might seem even less obvious that the window is off center if you evened out the panels on each end of the rod without being so heavy as to block out all of the natural light. Just a thought.
