Piano dreams come true!

As we were sitting around together during our Christmas holiday this year, talking about 2015 goals, I stated that one of my goals was to get a piano.  Since we started looking for a piano I have been asked, “Do you play?”   The answer?  Uhm…I don’t think so.  I used to play A LOT.  But it’s been a while.

We have not had a piano the entire time we have been married and moving around the country. That’s 20 years people!  20 years!  You may know that I have music in my blood (because I told you 40 things you might not know about me a few years back).  I sing all the time…apparently (I know this because Madison told me the other day) but I have missed the piano.

So one of my goals for this year was to get a piano and retrain my fingers and brain and try to get back what I’ve lost in the last 20 years.  I’ve always wanted a baby grand and we have the perfect room for it in this house so we started the search for a used one because that’s what we could afford.  We had a “piano guy” (Matt Coker of Everything Piano and Organ) check “under the hood” of a piano we found on Craig’s list and ended up having him help us find one.

Wes and Madison thought I was crazy when I said that choosing a piano is like picking a wand (Harry Potter reference), the piano has to choose you.  Not really, but it has to “feel” right and every piano sounds a little different and I wanted my piano to make my heart sing.  Ha.  Finding one that has the right feel, tone, fits the bill appearance wise AND is the right price is — well it means trying a lot of pianos and waiting for the right one to become available…and find you.

Well Matt helped us find this one and it has a great history!  We love the matte black finish, it fits perfectly in our room and we all love it’s sound.  I think I’m the only one that cared about how it felt under my fingers (probably because I’m the only one that has played) and it feels good.  So good.

I woke up this morning to Wes playing his two songs that he learned as a kid and still remembers.  Madison is KILLING it!  She started plunking away literally as soon as it was delivered.  Matt even gave her a mini lesson since he was still here when she started playing.  She reads music because she plays several other instruments so she’s figuring it out and progressing through the little beginner book we have.  It will be fun to watch her progress once we get an instructor giving her some lessons!

black grand piano 3Me?  I’ve been playing every day!  (We got it on Thursday.)  It’s starting to feel natural to me again and I’m remembering some of my old go-to songs.  I know you want a concert, right?  Trust me.  You don’t!  Not yet.  LOL   Maybe in a year…  Even though none of us are concert ready, there is just something about having a piano in our home that makes me feel pure joy.

  1. My parents bought a Wurlitzer organ when I was in my early teens. It had two manuals of keys and 2 octaves of pedals. I loved playing that thing. For a while I thought I’d play in a roller skating rink when I grew up. Good thing I didn’t go with that plan! I totally understand the absolute joy that comes from playing!

Songratulations!!! :)))) I am thrilled for/with you and your family. I know I look forward to a little YouTube of you playing! It looks great in the room and I agree with Annet M… need that wing back chair :)))

  3. So exciting! And yes, the absolute perfect room. Just needs a wing-back chair for reading or listening to the piano… !

  4. Congratulations!!! It’s beautiful! I love my black grand and the matte helps keep it “slightly” dust free looking…sorta. LOL! You will enjoy playing it so much since you played years ago. Nothing like sinking those fingers back in the keys again. I’m excited for you. Nobody understands the keys of a grand piano more than a pianist! Have fun!

  5. I cannot believe how perfect it fits in your library! So beautiful!
