My laundry room reno is working out just as I planned. Muahahaha. One thing about me — I hate wasted space. I wanted to utilize the entire space above and around my washer and dryer. You know what I started out with was just..not…working!
I was originally thinking I’d build out a soffit and then hang regular upper cabinets from it. (Like 12″ or 14″ deep.) But that left so much empty space behind the soffit that was just wasted. So I came up with a plan…
I built a platform. Framed it like you would any wall. Secured it into studs on the back and both sides. Then I climbed up on it to see how strong it was. It was strong enough to hold me. I was in the process of jumping up and down when Wes walked by and almost had a heart attack. He’s afraid of heights and apparently transferred fear is just as powerful as — well as if he were up there jumping around. So I got down promptly. ’Cause I love that guy and don’t want to cause him fear.
I built my cabinets. This one had to fit around the intake vent so I got creative. Because — you know — I don’t want to waste a SINGLE INCH of storage.
The hardest part might have been moving the washer back into place. That thing is seriously heavy!
You see the cabinet behind me? That one is removable so you can get behind there to hook everything up. It just makes it a bit easier. Especially for leveling. That was the second hardest part.
But it’s all coming together as planned. My cabinets are 36″ deep! It’s awesome. I can fit a LOT of stuff in there.
But how am I going to access the back space in that deep a cabinet? Pull out storage!
And the awesomeness of this room is just beginning to take shape. It’s good to be back!

You are absolutely amazing! I love all of the storage and all of the thought that you put into EVERY SINGLE space that you redo. You are so talented!
Have a great day.
Pam
When I totally steal this idea (the area above my w/d have been bugging me since we moved here 8 years ago!) I will totally tag you and give you all the credit. LOVE the platform idea!!!
And a question: did you build the whole platform and then attach it (and if so, how by yourself?) or did you attach the back and sides to the walls and then finish?
Marked level line across all walls where it would be attached. Marked where existing studs were. Built entire platform and I think I had Madison hold it on one side while I nailed it on the other into the studs. Then I took her side and nailed it too. Then I nailed and screwed into every single stud I could hit.
Awesome….thanks!
Brilliant! There is never such a thing as too much storage!
Love it! I especially love the picture of you pushing the machine sitting on the floor. I think we’ve all done that.
Can’t wait to see it finished. You’re ah.maz.ing!
I am loving this! We are planning on re-doing our laundry room next month. You have given me all sorts of ideas! When I grow up, I want to be you!
