I’m trying to develop some kind of schedule around here and that includes DIY Boot Camp on Mondays: Where I bring you a DIY tip/technique/tutorial of one sort or another until I completely run out of ideas! I’m starting out by FINALLY going over my tools, starting with…well you’ll see in the video.
I have to tell you though, talking into a camera with not another person around is a very difficult thing to do. I am not even joking here, I spent the ENTIRE DAY yesterday filming, deleting, refilming…this clip!
I hope this gets easier or I’ll never get anything done around here.
It’s actually OK that I didn’t do anything else yesterday because my hands, knees, elbow and wrist are all messed up from a project I did this weekend…but that’s for another day. (But now you know why I’m wearing a wrist brace in my video!)
I’ve had my DeWalt drill for about five years but this one is pretty close if you’re interested. DEWALT DCD710S2 12-Volt Max 3/8-Inch Drill Driver Kit (Affiliate Link)
Have a fabulous day!

Well, lady, you did just fine!! I have myself an 18V Dewalt and I love it! I have the quick-change chuck and I adjust the clutch all the time to find that sweet spot! I look forward to seeing what else you have to share! Great job!
Thank you so much. I bought my first drill a few weeks ago thinking I might put a screw in a wall once everynow and then. In reality I love my drill, and it rarely gets put away. I didn’t know anything about clutches or interchangable bits, infact I didn’t even know how to get the chuck (which I didn’t know the name for) to grip quickly, I have been manually turning the “tightening thing” instead of hold it and pressing the trigger. Thanks for the basic info.
Yeah, I’m so glad you are getting good use out of your first drill! I’m glad to know that the basic info is helpful. That quick tightening trick took me a while to learn too.
Sandra, you are doing great! Your video is very informative and I realize I have the wrong drill. I love watching you do all the things I wanted to do when I was younger. I hope you feel better soon.
SOOO glad you decided to do the video – cant wait for the next one.
First, I love your blog. You are an inspiration. Truly. Second, gosh, I have been using that exact tool and never knew the full function of the thing. (I’m not one to read instructions!) Wow. Your succinct brief video was all I needed…I can’t wait for the next video! Thanks again for such a fun/informative blog.
K, here’s the deal…you are cute and you do great on camera!! I see an HGTV show in your future!! (Don’t forget about us, k??)
Thank you for all the information!! I’ve had my own drill for a few years, but much like my nice camera I just use the basics!!! Now I feel so much smarter!!!! Awesome!!!
Haha. I still use my nice camera on full auto most of the time.
It takes me 15 hours to film a 3 minute clip so I’d never eat, sleep or see my family if I tried to do more. It makes me smile that you think I could though!
Thanks for the video! I’ve been stripping screws right and left thinking I just didn’t have the muscle behind the driver to keep it from doing that. Now I’ll be using all those nifty numbers on there instead. Love the quick way to get the chuck on the bit without hand turning–I learn something every time you put a tip, tutorial, or project on here!
Do you mean you’re stripping out the screw heads? Or the wood? If you’re stripping out the screw head, you do need to apply more pressure.
Or get an impact driver. They do most of the hard work for you. If you’re stripping out the wood so your screw isn’t gripping anything, yup, you just need to lower your torque.
I was stripping out the screws, but your advice worked for that as well. As soon as I hit that switch on the top to the lower speed and also turned down the dial, the drill didn’t jump out of the head of the screw when I pulled the trigger and it stopped when the screw was seated. It isn’t taking as much muscle behind the drill to keep it in place and not strip. Maybe it’s my imagination, but it IS working! I’ll take a placebo effect if it actually works
Hey, Sandra! You really ARE a natural on camera!! I think your local TV station needs a new program featuring your tutorials and tips for DIYers….SERIOUSLY!! Can’t wait for your next one!
Thank you Marsha. Ugh. I’m already dreading the next one! (But I’ll come through!)
Can I put in a vote that your next video be about your nail gun? Pretty please?
